Fundamental Planes, and the Barless Mbh-σ Relation, for Supermassive Black Holes
The residuals about the standard Mbh-σ relation correlate with the effective radius, absolute magnitude, and Sérsic index of the host bulge. Although, it is noted here that the elliptical galaxies do not partake in such correlations. Moreover, it is revealed that barred galaxies (with their relatively small, faint, and low stellar concentration bulges) can deviate from the Mbh-σ relation by δ l...
متن کاملAn Observed Fundamental Plane Relation for Supermassive Black Holes
We study observed correlations between supermassive black hole (BHs) and the properties of their host galaxies, and show that the observations define a BH “fundamental plane” (BHFP), of the form MBH ∝ σ3.0±0.3 R0.43±0.19 e or MBH ∝ M 0.54±0.17 ∗ σ 2.2±0.5, analogous to the FP of elliptical galaxies. The BHFP is preferred over a simple relation between MBH and any of σ, M∗, Mdyn, or Re alone at ...
متن کاملThe M• −σ Relation for Supermassive Black Holes
We investigate the differences in the M• −σ relation derived recently by Ferrarese & Merritt and by Gebhardt and collaborators. The shallower slope found by the latter authors (3.75 vs. 4.8) is due partly to the use of a regression algorithm that ignores measurement errors, and partly to the value of the velocity dispersion adopted for a single galaxy, the Milky Way. A steeper relation is shown...
متن کاملBeyond the Bulge: a Fundamental Relation between Supermassive Black Holes and Dark Matter Halos
The possibility that the masses M• of supermassive black holes (SBHs) correlate with the total gravitational mass of their host galaxy, or the mass MDM of the dark matter halo in which they presumably formed, is investigated using a sample of 16 spiral and 20 elliptical galaxies. The bulge velocity dispersion σc, typically defined within an aperture of size R < ∼ 0.5 kpc, is found to correlate ...
متن کاملA Fundamental Relation Between Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies
The masses of supermassive black holes correlate almost perfectly with the velocity dispersions of their host bulges, MBH ∝ σ α, where α ∼ 5. The relation is much tighter than the relation between MBH and bulge luminosity, with a scatter no larger than expected on the basis of measurement errors alone.
